Your business cannot catch Coronavirus!

We have something amazing to tell you,
your business cannot catch Coronavirus.

Studio news 16th April 2020

So while we all personally hide in isolation, coughing
into our sleeves cowering behind gloves and facemasks…
Your company doesn’t have to hide, and shouldn’t,
if it wants to survive…

You have 2 options as a business owner:

Option 1: Embrace being a victim, pause marketing, and possibly fold.

Option 2: Grab the bull by the horns and get your name out there, and survive (and eventually thrive).

If you (and honestly you need to to do this) decide to grab that bull and get your name out there you have a few things to consider:

1. Right now, while we’re in lockdown, think of ways of diversifying if your business model is struggling, home deliveries, increased digital presence, vary your product or service.
You can’t afford to hide, make sure people remember you by being visible (all be it digitally).

2. Prepare for the race, when life returns to normal there will be a race for business (things will get cut-throat) and now you need to hone your offering, the way you describe and offer your services and business, the way you look, and you need to have ‘things’ ready to target clients.

Businesses are going to fold, don’t let yours be one.

We want to (and really can) help, even if it’s just a chat and sharing a few ideas, so please get in touch with anyone from PHd design.

We’re one of the top 100 design consultancies in the UK!

We’re one of the top 100 design
consultancies in the UK!

Studio news 1st January 2020

The top 100 list is an independent and definitive review and ranking of
the 100 most successful consultancies within the UK… and PHd are on
it! Design week are the people behind the list, they are the trusted
go-to resource for designers and design buyers in our industry.

How we got on this prestigious list: You cannot nominate yourself, buy a ranking or get clients to vote for you. It’s 100% determined by meticulous and impartial research.

Why are we so proud to be in the top 100 designers list, why this is such a big deal?

1. There are about 125,000 design companies in the UK.

2. This means PHd design are in the top 0.1% of all UK design companies.

3. With most on the list located in London, we’re one of a select few in the midlands & the only company in Staffordshire.

What does this mean for you?

1. Confidence that you’re using the best design. Nothing else changes, other than our excitement and pride in our work!

2. We’re boutique, small but still perfectly formed. Our size means we care about each and every job, you are and will always be important to us!

3. You get better value than ever before. We still offer the same great value design rates we always have, but with a massive discount when compared to the other ‘big boys’ on the top 100 list!

We’re not modest…We’re absolutely thrilled to tell you how great we are, but what we’re most proud of is
that we’ve been recognised as one of the best designers in the country, on the independent (and very
important) design week top 100! Honestly though… we’re really moved that our little boutique design
company is being compared to the very best the world has to offer in design. Haven’t we done well!

Design is subjective, however there are a number of quantifiable ways
that you can go wrong, luckily you’re readying this, so you won’t make
any of those silly ‘faux pas’. We’ve been doing this for many years, so
learn from our mistakes, and get a desirable, effective and usable logo!

1. Meet the client
& understand the business’ needs

2. Research about the industry:
more knowledge means better design

3. Think ahead: a logo must
work in different situations

4. Get ideas out of your brain,
the best tool for that: a humble pencil

5. Avoid pixelation,
always create as a vector file

6. Once the concept is clear, use the
computer to try multiple options

7. Analyse carefully and get rid of
everything that’s not essential

8. The logo must work: when reversed…
9. or in black and white

10. A good logo must work
when used really big or small

11. Create an original design,
never copy or imitate others

12. A great logo must be unique,
do not use clip art logos or icons

13. Keep it simple,
do not use special effects or gradients

14. Avoid design trends,
a logo needs to last a good while

15. Respect the hierarchy of information,
the biggest word: the most important

16. Do not confuse the eye,
use two typefaces at most

17. Use different typefaces to help with
hierarchy, readability & interest

18. Text must be easy enough for
even your grandma to read

19. If possible: fit the logo into a square,
avoid obscure proportions

20. Pay attention to details, align items so
it looks considered, clean and neat

21. Use colours, shapes and layout to
ensure the result looks appropriate

22. When evolving a brand…
always keep the key elements

23. Do not use taglines in the logo,
let the logo speak for itself

24. A logo is memorable,
if you can sketch a logo in 5 seconds

25. Now, you know the rules
break them if you want, but always…

PHd design win a rather lovely
international design award!

Studio news 4th March 2019

Little old us (PHd design) have won an award for the best packaging
(yeah the very best packaging) at the coveted International Chip Shop
Awards in London… and no, they are nothing to do with real chip shops.

The awards are in their 10th year and exist to award creativity beyond the call of duty. The judges were inundated with nominations from all over the world in many different categories so had a tough job whittling them down to a core set of finalists.

PHd are proud to have been nominated, and then gone on to win an award in the category of Best Packaging Design with their Dodgy Brews range of summer ales. The range consists of 5 ales with unusual names which catch the public’s eye and are selling in a growing number of independent retail outlets.

The ales are: Scruffy Slapper, Knob Jockey, Snot Gobbler, Fooky Nell and Dog Ruff.

Managing Director Peter Howard comments. “It just shows that being
brave with design and having conviction in your ideas can pay off, these
designs are selling well and to cap it all they have been recognised by
the industry for the effect that design can do to make a difference”.
